Corrosion Resistance of XM-19 Fasteners

One of the essential features of Nitronic 50/XM-19 fasteners is their exceptional corrosion resistance. They exhibit excellent resistance to pitting, crevices, and general corrosion in harsh environments. They are highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in natural environments and corrosive solutions such as chlorides, nitrates, and sulfides. They also have excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion (IGC) due to their low carbon content and high nickel, chromium, and molybdenum levels.

Chemical Composition of Nitronic 50 Fasteners

Nitronic 50 has a unique chemical composition that gives it its unique properties. It is austenitic stainless steel that contains 20-23% chromium, 11-13% nickel, and 4-6% manganese. It also contains 1.5-3% molybdenum, 0.1-0.3% nitrogen, and small amounts of silicon, copper, phosphorus, and sulfur. Its low carbon content (less than 0.03%) gives it excellent resistance to intergranular corrosion and increases its toughness and flexibility.

Heat Treatment of XM-19 Fasteners

Nitronic 50/XM-19 fasteners are made using a variety of heat treatments. One common heat treatment is annealing, performed at temperatures of 1950-2150°F (1066-1177°C) and followed by rapid cooling. This process increases the alloy's ductility and toughness, making it more cracking-resistant. Nitronic 50/XM-19 can also be cold-worked to produce high-strength fasteners, further enhancing its strength, corrosion resistance, and durability.
