The chemical composition of stainless steel 17-4ph varies depending on the standards and specifications that a particular company adheres to. However, it generally contains 15-17 % chromium, 3-5% nickel, 3-5% copper, and 0.15-0.45 % carbon. It also contains small amounts of molybdenum, columbium (niobium), and tantalum, enhancing its strength and corrosion resistance. The composition of stainless steel 17-4ph allows it to be heat-treated to achieve various levels of strength and toughness.

Like any other stainless steel alloy, machining stainless steel 15-5ph flanges can be challenging due to its high hardness and resistance to deformation. However, it can be machined to precise specifications with the right tools and techniques. Also, due to its high strength and hardness, it is ideal for critical applications requiring tight tolerances, such as aerospace or defence. Nonetheless, the machinability of this alloy is considered fair to good.
